Equestrian trail users exhibit a phenomenon I call community policing, where they take on role of public educators, particularly regarding trail etiquette. The challenge, however, is that they do not possess the authority to effect genuine change. They lack a formal capacity to hold individuals accountable for violating established rules (laws) or perceived guidelines (etiquette).

When non-equestrians, such as cyclists, overlook proper etiquette or established rules, equestrians on social media often respond with outrage, sparking a wave of anger and a rise in educational campaigns aimed at informing them. However, these initiatives often fall short for various reasons.
